Discovering Writing

The joy of writing is the surprise. How are we as students supposed to write and be okay with the surprises that come along the way? I mean, when I’m writing a research paper. How does that work? Do I just begin writing using the support I have collected and then the surprise just happens? I would really like to be able to further my ability in accepting the surprises on the way while writing a research essay. I usually put up a block for my creative side when writing a research paper but I now know that it’s all right to accept the surprise when writing any kind of essay. Yes, it might be more exciting with a free write than a research paper but all in all while writing you can expect and accept the surprise. YAHOO! Surprises begin from writing a discovery draft, which Murray explains in chapter 18. It helps you discover “what you know and you need to know.”(171)

To write a discovery draft you have to have a writer’s eye, which Murray’s explains in chapter 14. The writer’s eye is an interesting, however, obvious concept but I’m not sure I have ever thought of it. I see so much in a day, I see people interacting, I see God’s creation, I see books, I see cars, seeing things is a part of life. I realize how much I take it for grated. I see and I see and I see some more!!! It’s the most incredible thing! I can write from what I see, I should be writing all the time. When I write about what I see I learn more about what I saw. When I write I see even more, I see new things I write about it and learn more from what I saw. This is the most phenomenal aspect of writing!

  1. Seeing with a writer's eye is something I used to do often. And I can honestly say, my writing was better then. However, having Murray point it out in such an obvious way, reminds me of this past time and that I need to find this view again. It's great to see you are catching on to the concept as well.
