I agree with what Murray has to say in regards to how person should set up multiple mock deadlines in order to get as much out of a paper as possible. Far to often, in the past, I would make a habbit of putting off a paper until the night before, and be satisfied with a passing B or C for a mark. However, once established within my degree program in University, I began writing in many of my classes on the same topic. Likewise, I would look back on essays that I had written for previous classes, only to realize that most of my thoughts were underdeveloped, and I was not making a very good name for myself with my professors.
However, from this, I learned a valuable lesson about the benefits of extensive proofreading. Personally, I think that what makes Murray's multiple deadline idea so practical, is that setting up multiple deadlines leaves more opportunity for revision. I used to think that I didn't need to revise. I have always been a decent writer; thus, I have always been content with simply completing the task of the essay. One of the greatest things I could have done to aid this bad habit was to start allowing my roommates to read my papers. My roommates ae both excellent writer, who are quite skeptical about my writing style; yet, whenever I have them read my writing, I come out able to approach my topic from an entirely new perspective. And, I believe that is the key. I believe that the key to becoming a better writer is to be able to write a response to a topic, step away, and then re-write on that topic in a new and, often times, cleaner way. However, in order to leave enough time for the proofreads and revisions to happen. Henceforth, get the essay done as early as possible, and avoid stressing of the actual deadline. A writer who stresses over actual deadlines is the same as a procrastinator with little determination to improve their writing skills.

Deadlines most definately do help. Especially when it comes to a subject that you are not super interested in and requries alot of time to put together.
ReplyDeleteIt does also help when your major is decided upon and much of the writing that you do has a similar style and content.
