However, with this being said I believe it is not completely essential to make an extensive outline. Like Murray writes, "Outline only if it helps you". I feel when I was forced in my younger days to make outlines, the end result was nothing like I wanted. I only wrote about stuff in order to fill requirements and to follow an outline that I had to put tons of time into. I believe some of the best papers written are when you just start and let your mind and thoughts take over. If you simply sit down and write everything you want, you will be more affective. In a way this is like an outline, but just very informal. Some of the outlines Murray presents I believe are unnecessary and really just force you to add material that does not fit. Let your imagination control your writing, then put it into form.

Personal Outline
I completely support the idea of making an outline. for me it mostly just keep all of my ideas connecting. This is because I normally struggle with creating smooth transitions and actually make sense. Without any kind of outline to keep your points together it will defiantly loose its sense of direction.

I see where you are coming from, that is an extremely good point that outlines are not for everyone. I believe there is a time when it would be very effective to not use an outline maybe with a creative essay or something a little less formal. However a research paper I believe it is very important to use an outline. At least for me I have to have structure when writing and using others writing to form and transition my paper.
