The Importance of the Verb!

Something I never really realised that really cofuses things is the idea of the dimension of time when using a verb creates how important using it really becomes. I sometimes find myself getting confused writing papers because my verbs tend to get mixed up with the past, present, and future. Not only does this complicate things but the fact that it varies according to who is performing the action. With both of these major ideas emphasised by O'Conner it really creates the importance of our use with verbs. One of the first ways of dealing with this that was mentioned was to make sure the verb and the subject agree. Meaning if the subject is sungular, or plural then you must make sure the verb matches it. It is very common because the real subject is not always easy to see. A few problems I have run into that O'Conner also mentiones is subjects with mupltiple personalities, or the use of what and whatnot. Even more common is I find myself confusing was and were within my sentence and even when you read it over it almost gets harder to notice in the big picture. Overall we have to be very careful with our usage of the verbs because if we are not, then things can get very messy.

  1. I completely agree that we need to be very careful while using verbs. It is definitely something I struggle with and know I need to improve on it. I believe it can make or break the piece of writing.

  2. My biggest struggle is with tense! I have learnt the hard way to check, double check, and triple check the tense of all my verbs!
