Writing about deadlines has got me thinking about substances people will turn to when in need of a boost, or some inspiration in order to finish a paper. I’m sure everyone is more than familiar with deadline friendly caffeinated beverages of all sorts. A large energy drink happens to be my personal favorite when I’m in the clutch. Without them I may have been found asleep at my desk the next morning not having finished an important assignment.
I would like to think that no one has a problem with using these substances in order to get the creative juices flowing. My question though is what kind of effect does it have on my writing? Is the paper I wrote while buzzing on caffeine as good as one I wrote normally? Will I be able to find more inspiration in this heightened state than if I wrote it normally? I know for sure that trying to write a paper while tired produces very poor writing, something I don’t enjoy doing. When I use caffeine to combat this tiredness I feel like I am able to write normally, but is that the case? If I am writing a paper under normal circumstances will a caffeine boost provide a boost in my writing?
I think that writing under as normal circumstance as possible is the answer and that some sort of alternate substance might skew whatever you are trying to write. A quick boost might be nice but overall a steady level rhythm is probably the best solution in deciding how to write.
I'm guilty of the energy drinks too. My personal favorite is a green Amp.
