The World of Danglers

“Life would be pretty dull if everyone’s English were perfect.” (O’Connor, Pg.189) This was very encouraging to see O’Connor a grammar expert, say that life wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for mistakes. Considering the fact I am pretty good at making mistakes especially when it comes to grammar. When I am free writing I always find myself with danglers. They just pop out of nowhere! Always mixing up words left and right, which makes a sentence very confusing when looking at the proper placement of the verb/noun/adverb/adjectives. However, in our world today we know exactly what is trying to be said. As O’Connor says danglers are in our newspapers, magazines, billboards, everywhere we look we see danglers. (Pg. 190)

I find it so interesting that danglers are now “allowed” in our popular text. You would think that people would steer faraway from those guys, but that is not the case. The reason so many publications use danglers is probably because it catches the readers eye, it causes you to stop and think for a second of what is truly being asked. So what exactly does this mean for us as writers in training? I think means learning the sense of your audience, whether writing for a professor or a media type audience. This means double the work for us. Being able to master both the proper grammatical style and the more laid back “fun” or “eye-catching” style of writing.

All in all use the danglers when you can but NEVER forget how to writing without the danglers!
