AHH Writer's Block!!

Writer’s block is the worst. I pretty much had it for a full year after I decided to take a year off of University and what Murray says is true, “writer’s block usually occurs when writers fail to make writing a conscious habit; at least, that was also the case for me.

However, to compound some of the examples that Murray offers on how to get rid of writer’s block, I was able to overcome my brain freeze by simply talking with all of my peers about my problem. In the times when I was most frustrated with not being able to put anything down on paper, I found that many of my friends would often be curious about what it was that I was trying to write about. By bringing my issue up, my friends would often try to find ideas as to what they would write about, as a means of some degree of competition.

I found that writing these ideas down often times gave birth to new ideas which would send me on the path of writing. Even if sometimes my friends’ advice was terrible, I still would write it down as a way to jump start other ideas. In the times that this did not work, I would start to lack confidence in my creative abilities; thus, I would recommend finding the one thing it is that you are most creative at, whether it be music, art, or singing, and take a break from writing to do something else that gets those creative juices flowing. These are just some other tactics that I use to avoid writer’s block because I know how much it sucks.

  1. I know exactly what you mean buddy.

I often made the mistake of taking a break, but doing something unproductive.

The best way to unclog the brainpipes is to be productive in something else, and then come back, so you don't lose your creative momentum.
